Zhytomyr district is located in the central part of Zhytomyr region, at the junction of historic Volhynia, Polissya and Middle Dnieper. The Teteriv River with granite canyons flows within the district. There are such historical and cultural monuments as the Museum of Cosmonautics named after Sergei Korolyov, the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral and St. Sophia Cathedral in Zhytomyr, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Korostyshiv, the Tereshchenko estate in Denyshy. The Botanical Garden of Zhytomyr National Agroecological University is a natural monument. Recreation areas at Korostyshiv granite quarries are popular.
