Kherson Art Museum

Museum / gallery

Kherson Art Museum named after O. Shovkunenko was opened in 1977 in the former building of the City Duma. His prototype was the pre-revolutionary Kherson Museum of Fine Arts, whose collection included works of painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative and applied arts, donated by the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, the St. Petersburg Porcelain Factory and the Glass Factory. The reason for the creation of the current museum was the city's receipt of a private collection of paintings by collector M. Kornilovskaya. Now the museum's collection consists of works of art of the XVII-XXI centuries, and its geography covers several continents. The collection is based on more than 150 works by the outstanding Ukrainian painter O. Shovkunenko. The exhibition also presents paintings by V. Polenov, A. Savrasov, I. Kramsky, V. Makovsky, M. Vrubel, M. Pymonenko, V. Orlovsky and others, iconography of the XVII-XX centuries.
