National Historical and Memorial Reserve & quot; Battlefield of Brest & quot; founded in 1912 on the site where the greatest battle of the Liberation War took place in 1651 under the leadership of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky (sometimes incorrectly called the "Battle of Brest"). A 100,000-strong Cossack army, supported by 30,000 Tatars of Khan Islam III Girey, fought near Berestechko against King Jan Casimir II's 300,000-strong Polish army. Due to the betrayal of the Tatars, the Cossacks were defeated, losing by various estimates from 10 to 30 thousand killed. As a result of the defeat in the Battle of Brest, Khmelnytsky was forced to conclude an unfavorable Bila Tserkva peace with Jan Kazymyr. In 1912, in memory of the tragic battle, the wooden St. Michael's Church (17th century) was moved to the island of Zhuravlykha, where Khmelnytsky prayed before the battle. According to the project of architects V. Maksymov and O. Shchusev, a magnificent church-monument of St. George was built in the style of Cossack churches with nine baths and an iconostasis (artist I. Yezhakevych). On the second floor is the so-called & quot; balcony & quot; Church of Boris and Gleb. An underground passage connects St. Michael's Church with the underground chapel-tomb of Paraskeva Pyatnytsia near St. George's Church, where the remains of the dead Cossacks are buried (in particular, they filled the hollow central pillar). In 1966, the museum-reserve "Cossack graves" was established. Today it is the National Historical and Memorial Reserve & quot; Battlefield of Brest & quot ;. The museum of the complex presents the findings made by archaeologists on the battlefield. In 1991, a monument to the Cossacks and peasant insurgents was unveiled (sculptor A. Kushch). St. George's Monastery of the PCU operates here.
