City Gorodische on the river. Olshanka is located between Korsun-Shevchenkovsky and Smela, 60 km west of Cherkassy. On the site of the present center of the city, there are the remains of an ancient Russian settlement, which gave the name to the present city. For the first time in documents, the Settlement is mentioned in the 16th century, when these lands belonged to the Konetspolsky gentry. In 1649 the Settlement became the centennial town of the Cherkassk regiment. Later it belonged to the princes Lyubomirsky, G. Potemkin, Counts Branitsky, M. Vorontsov, E. Shuvalova.
