General information about Verkhivnia
A village on the r. Verhovenka 65 km east of Berdychiv. It was first mentioned in Polish documents in 1600 as the possession of the Lubomirskys, then the Skorunskys. Since 1780, owned by Count V. Gansky. Here in 1847-50. lived and worked on the drama "Stepmother" and "The Human Comedy" the great French writer Honoré de Balzac, having married the widow of Count Evelina Hanska, whom he met in Switzerland after many years of correspondence. The Hansky palace (1800) in the classicism style, two wings, part of the underground passage, a park and a church - the Hansky family tomb (1810) have been preserved.
Село на річці Верховенка в 65 км на схід від Бердичева. Вперше згадується в польських документах в 1600 році як володіння Любомирських, потім Скорунських. З 1780 року у власності графа В. Ганського. Тут в 1847-50 рр. жив і працював над драмами "Мачуха" та "Людська комедія" великий французький письменник Оноре де Бальзак, одружившись на вдові графа Евеліні Ганській, з якою познайомився в Швейцарії після багаторічного листування. Зберігся палац Ганських (1800 р.) в стилі класицизму, два флігелі, частина підземного ходу, парк та костел - родинна усипальниця Ганських (1810 р.).

Honore de Balzac Literary Memorial Museum (Hansky Palace)

The Empire-style palace with antique motifs in the decor was built in 1800 by the Italian architect Blerio Count V. Gansky, who inherited the estate of Verkhivnya from his father Jan Gansky. The count presented the estate with a palace and outbuildings, a large landscape park and a tomb church to his young wife Evelina of the Rzewuski family, who was considered one of the first beauties in Poland. From here, Evelina began a secret correspondence with Honore de Balzac, signing under the pseudonym "Foreigner". Their first meeting in Switzerland soon took place, but only 15 years later, when Evelina's husband died, was the writer able to come to the Supreme. In Balzac's surviving office, on the second floor of the palace, is a table at which he wrote "The Deputy from Arcy," "The Petty Bourgeois," "The Theater That He Is," and the drama "Stepmother." The interior of Balzac's bedroom has not survived - there are portraits of the novelist performed by his contemporaries. The Balzac Memorial Museum is located in these rooms. Other rooms of the palace are occupied by the agrotechnical college, restoration is underway.
