Kakhovka

The city of Kakhovka is a regional center on the left bank of the Kakhovka Reservoir. Founded in 1791 by Colonel D. Kulikovsky on the site of the Turkish fortress Islam-Kermen, which was repeatedly stormed by the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks, and destroyed in 1695 by the troops of Hetman I. Mazepa. The new city was named in honor of the hero of the Russian-Turkish wars M. Kakhovsky. During the Civil War in the Russian Empire, the Kakhovsky bridgehead became the arena of fierce battles between the Bolshevik army and the White Guards. On a mound near the Kakhovka bypass road (P-47 highway), 2 km south of the city, a monument "Legendary tachanka" (1967) was erected in honor of a mobile firing point invented at that time.
