Музей історії Давнього Галича розташований у колишніх Митрополичих палатах – пам'ятці архітектури ХVІІІ століття. Після руйнування стародавнього Галича татарами у XIII ст. та перенесення столиці Галичини до Холма, потім до Львова, колишній княжий дитинець залишився резиденцією галицьких митрополитів. Зокрема, тут була літня резиденція митрополита Андрія Шептицького, за сприяння якого в 1937 році археолог Я. Пастернак заснував перший музей давнього Галича. Спочатку експозиція знахідок із розкопок у селі Крилос розміщувалася в каплиці Св. Василя. В 1990-х роках експозицію перенесли до відреставрованого приміщення Митрополичих палат.
