The city of Okhtyrka was founded in the middle. XVII century. as a border guard fort of the Commonwealth on the banks of the river. Vorskla, on the site of the Tatar yurt Okhtyr. The name comes from the small river of the same name and the Okhtyr mountain (Turkic - "white yar"). Already in 1647, the Okhtyrka city came under the authority of the Moscow Tsar by agreement. The core of the city was formed by a small fortress, which occupied the territory of the present center, from the river to the square where the Intercession Cathedral is located (not preserved).
