The village of Marijampol is located on the high left bank of the Dniester, 20 km southeast of Galich. In the XII-XV centuries. at this place there was an ancient Russian settlement Chertopol, later destroyed by the Tatars (first mentioned in 1378). In the XVII century. a wooden castle of God Vidok, which belonged to the gentry T. Belzetskiy, also burned down by the Tatars, arose on the site of the ancient settlement. The new settlement of Marijampol was founded in 1691 by the Polish hetman S. Yablonovsky. He erected a stone castle and a church for the miraculous icon "Winner" or "Our Lady of the Knights" (in honor of the Virgin Mary, probably the settlement got its current name).
