General information about Terpinnia

A village on the r.Molochna 15 km from Melitopol, next to the Zaporizhzhia-Melitopol highway. It was founded in 1795 (according to other sources in 1802) by Christians-Dukhobors (followers of the Orthodox Orthodox teaching) resettled here from Russia. The name of the village symbolizes resignation to the hardships of life on the way to spiritual improvement. The village has a 400-year-old patriarch oak and a park "Healing springs". On the outskirts there is a unique natural monument Stone Grave, which is a heap of giant blocks of sandstone. Since ancient times, it has been used by people as a sanctuary. On its basis, a historical and archaeological reserve of the same name was created.

Stone Grave Historical and Archaeological Reserve

Museum / gallery , Natural object , Archaeological site

A giant pile of stones up to 12 m high - the remains of sandstone of the former Sarmatian Sea. The shape resembles a mound, whence the name. It has been used as a sanctuary since ancient times. Many stones are covered with images of the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Copper-Bronze Age and the Middle Ages (from the XVI-XIII millennia BC to the X-XII centuries). Some researchers believe that the writings of the Stone Tomb are more archaic than the writing of Sumer, and are the oldest examples of writing on Earth. In order to preserve the petroglyphs, the passages to them are covered with sand. Copies can be seen in the building of the museum-reserve "Stone Grave". Especially impressive is the sculpture of a man-fish aged 7,000 years.
