The city of Volnyansk on the river. Volnyanka is located 25 km north-east of Zaporozhye. It was founded in 1840 (according to other sources in 1810-16) as the village of Sofievka. The current city developed around the Sofievka railway station, which was opened in 1873. Until 1966, the village was called Krasnoarmeyskoye. The Vladimir Church, built in 1902, has been preserved.

The Vilnyansk Museum of Local Lore opened in 1971. The museum has more than 2,000 items. To the attention of visitors 7 halls. The "Settlement" hall shows the history of the region from ancient times to the XIX century. In the hall "Beginning of the XX century." exhibited household items, tools, documents of this period. Other halls tell about revolutionary events, the history of the plant. T. Shevchenko, the events of World War II. Temporary exhibitions feature works by local artists, craftsmen and lovers of decorative and applied arts.
