The village of Stanitsa Luganska is a located on the river Seversky Donets, 10 km north-east of Luhansk. It was founded in 1677 as a watch post Lugan, in 1687 it was restored after the Tatar raid as Stanitsa Luhanska. The official date of foundation is considered to be 1688. The Museum of the Don Cossacks works.

Stanychno-Luhansk Museum of Local Lore, known as the Museum of the Don Cossacks, was opened in 1988 to mark the 300th anniversary of Stanytsia Luhanska. In 1993 the exposition "The village of Luhansk - the original settlement of the Don Cossacks" was opened.
