Місто гідробудівельників та енергетиків, одне з наймолодших міст України. Розташоване на високому Табурищанському мисі над Кременчуцьким водосховищем в 15 км вгору по Дніпру від Кременчука. Засноване в 1954 році на місці старовинного села Табурище одночасно з початком спорудження на Дніпрі Кременчуцького гідровузла (3-й ступінь Дніпровського каскаду), деякий час називалося Хрущов, потім КремГЕС, поки в 1969 році не отримало нинішню назву. Включило в себе відселений із зони затоплення історичне місто Новогеоргієвськ, відоме з 1615 року як польська фортеця Крилів. Основні квартали міста витягнуті вздовж берега водосховища. В центрі знаходиться парк культури і відпочинку ім. Т. Шевченка, де в 1978-му році було встановлено пам'ятник Кобзареві.

Svitlovodsk City Museum of Local Lore is located in a historic building where the first builder of Svitlovodsk M. Karpov lived. It was started by a museum room at the House of Culture, opened in 1970. One of the most interesting expositions is dedicated to the legendary city of Krylov (since 1822 - Novogeorgievsk), which fell into the flood zone of the Kremenchug reservoir. Photographs of the missing city, copies of archival documents are provided. Separate exhibitions are devoted to paleontology, the events of World War II, urban planning.
