The mining town of Anthracite is located on the spurs of the southeastern part of the Donetsk ridge, not far from the border with Russia. It was founded in 1895 near Gaevsky's small coal mine. The city owes its name to the anthracite lying here - the most ancient of the fossil coal. In 1904, the mine "Bokovsky Anthracite Mine" began work, from which the settlement was named Bokovo-Anthracite in 1920. In 1936 it became a regional center, and in 1962 it was renamed the city of Anthracite. The main budget-forming enterprise of the city is State Enterprise "Anthracite", which includes 4 mines (coal production is 1.8 million tons per year).
