An old Jewish town on the river. Goosebump 75 km south-west of Vinnitsa. It arose around the fortress of the 16th-17th centuries, the walls and tower of which have survived to this day. Named by the founder J. Zamoyski in honor of Florian Sharoi, patron saint of the Zamoyski family. In 1589 a defensive synagogue was built - one of the oldest Jewish temples in Ukraine. In the XVI century. the city was a powerful border outpost on the way of the Tatars. In 1648, the city was captured by M. Krivonos's Cossacks, but after the Andrusov peace he retreated back to Poland. In 1672 Shergorod was captured by the Turkish army and for 27 years he wore the name of Kucuk-Istanbul (Small Istanbul).
