City on the river. Moat 65 km south-west of Vinnitsa. Back in the X-XI century. on this place there was the ancient Russian city of Rov. In 1401, the first mention was made of the Moat fortress, which belonged to A. Rovskiy, then to the gentry S. Rey from Shumsk. After the Tatar raid in 1452, the Moat passed into the possession of the Russian voivode A. Odrovonzh. In 1537 the city was acquired by Queen Bona Sforza, wife of the Polish king Sigismund I, and in 1538-39. laid a new castle. The current name of Bar, which she gave to the city, probably comes from the Italian principality of Bari, where the queen was from. At different times S. Zholkevsky and B.
