Berehove

The resort village of Beregovoe (Kastropol) is located on the Black Sea coast between Alupka and Foros, at the Iphigenia rock. In the XI century. here there was a Byzantine fortification Kastropulo (fortress). According to legend, even before the creation of the fortress, an Orthodox monastery was founded on this site in memory of the martyrs who were crucified on a rock during the persecution of Christians (a memorial cross was installed). This legend echoes the Greek myth of Iphigenia - the priestess of the goddess Artemis, who sacrificed random sailors, throwing them off the cliff that now bears her name.
