The village of Gurzuf is the eastern outskirts of Big Yalta, the territory of the famous "Artek". The first fortress Gorzuv was erected on a rock above the Gurzuf bay in the 6th century, as there is a record in Byzantine sources in 553. The name probably comes from lat. ursus - bear (near the city is the Bear Mountain - Ayu-Dag). Remains of a Genoese fortress of the 11th-15th centuries have survived. The development of the resort began in 1811 with the construction of the villa of Armand de Richelieu, after which the village became a favorite vacation spot for the creative elite.
