The city of Ternopil is a cozy regional center on the river. Seret, one of the historical cities of Galicia. It arose in the 16th century. on the site of the ancient Russian fortification Sopilche (Topilche) destroyed by the Tatar-Mongols. In 1540, the Krakow castellan, the great crown hetman Jan Tarnowski, on the Terebovlian lands donated by King Sigismund I, began the construction of a castle to protect the Polish borders from the raids of the Tatars. The settlement was named Tarnopol in his honor. In 1548 the city received the Magdeburg Law. At various times it belonged to Austria, Russia, Poland.
