General information about Nizhyn
The historic city of Nizhyn on the river. Oster is famous for the products of the cannery - Nezhinsky cucumbers (a monument to a cucumber is installed at the central entrance to the plant). For the first time the city was mentioned in the annals of 1078 as Nezhatin, in 1147 as Unenezh. In 1625, a new city was built on the site of a settlement destroyed by the Tatar-Mongols. In 1663, the "Black Rada" took place in Nizhyn, at which I. Bryukhovetsky was elected hetman, who gave Ukraine under the rule of the Moscow Tsar. Nizhyn Post Office Museum

The only complex of post office buildings in Ukraine (XVIII century), which is almost completely preserved, in which the museum "Nizhyn Post Office" was opened. Post offices in Kyiv, Nizhyn and Baturyn were opened after the decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich on regular postal services between Moscow and Kiev in 1669. At the beginning of the XIX century Nizhyn post office was one of the largest in the Left Bank of Ukraine. M. Lomonosov, O. Pushkin, M. Gogol, T. Shevchenko and others stayed in the local hotel. The exposition is located in the former house of the station supervisor. The interior of the waiting room has been restored. The exhibition presents, in particular, a collection of postage stamps of Ukraine and Russia.

Nizhyn Museum of Local Lore. I. Spassky is located in an old house that belonged to the merchant Dyachenko in the XIX century. The funds have 30,000 exhibits that tell the history of the city from ancient times to 1945. An interesting collection of archaeological finds obtained during excavations in the old part of the city, things of the Cossack era (cold steel and firearms, hetman's universals), exhibits characterizing the multinational nature of Nizhyn (including the history of the Greek community). Of particular interest is the numismatic collection, the collection of orders and medals, the philatelic collection. The first Soviet HTZ tractor was installed in the yard of the Nizhyn Museum of Local Lore.
