Khotin is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine. The official foundation date is considered to be 1002, when the Kiev prince Vladimir the Great created a system of border fortresses on the southwestern borders of the ancient Russian state. The wooden fortress Khotyn on the banks of the Dniester was built on the site of more ancient Slavic settlements (the Troyan Shafts of the early Slavic period have survived). The name probably comes from the verb "to want": this place was desired by many, because the trade route from Galicia to the Black Sea ports passed here. In the XIII century. by order of Prince Danila Galitsky, a stone Khotyn fortress was built, which became an outpost of the Galicia-Volyn principality, then Moldavia.
